Tightening into a high: when higher yields pull capital toward stability

The policy-pivot read has two faces. The same conditions, a Fed lifting rates off a trough while the 10-year reprices higher, mean one thing when crypto is cheap and the opposite when crypto is expensive. This is the cautionary half, and it is the reason we built the read to cross-check structure rather than react to the hike alone.

The same setup, a different base

The mechanics are identical to the constructive read. The fed funds rate turns up after cuts and holds. The 10-year yield rises, capital rotating out of duration. The one variable that flips the meaning is where crypto sits, and here it sits stretched, well above its long-term (200-week) mean, an elevated structural position.

Why elevated flips the read

At a high, rising risk-free yield stops being background and becomes competition. When a long-dated Treasury pays a real, rising yield and crypto is already extended, the reward for holding stretched risk shrinks against the reward for rotating to stability. Long-duration capital that chased the move starts to prefer the certainty. The hike that reads as returning confidence at a low reads as a headwind at a high, because the tide it creates now pulls the other way.

This is why the clearest historical counterexample to a simple "hikes are bullish" rule fired at a high, not a low. When policy tightened into elevated prices, the outcome was a rotation out of risk, not into it. The base is the whole story.

Why we cross-check

Reacting to the hike alone would get this exactly backwards half the time. Tightening into stretched risk competes with it; tightening into a low supports it. We never let the event conclude without the base.

A condition, not a call

Like its constructive twin, this read is rare, logged when it occurs, and scored forward. It does not tell anyone to do anything. It describes a macro backdrop, tightening into stretched risk, that has historically favoured stability over extension, and it lets that description sit alongside every other lens the engine tracks. Cross-checking both sides is the point: we never let the hike conclude on its own.
