Reading the cycle with Fibonacci

Fibonacci retracement is one of the oldest tools in a chartist's box. The idea is simple: after a move, price often pauses or turns at fixed proportions of that move. Those proportions are public and well known. The part most people get wrong is not the math. It is the anchor.

The anchor is everything

A Fibonacci ruler is only as honest as the two points it is stretched between. Anchor the low end of the ruler to the wrong low, and every level it draws becomes fiction. This is the classic trap: draw the ruler from a low that is not actually the cycle low, and the whole map is off, sometimes by a very long way.

Orion's rule is simple and strict. The cycle ruler is not placed at the first low that looks like a bottom. It is placed only once structure has confirmed the low, once the market has actually shown that the down move is over and a new leg has begun. Before that confirmation there is no ruler, because there is no anchor worth trusting.

Reading position, not predicting

Once anchored, the ruler does one thing. It says where price sits between the bottom and the top. Deep in the lower part of the range, price sits where accumulation usually happens. In the middle, it sits in the fair zone. Toward the top, it sits extended. Past the top, it sits in territory that has historically meant euphoria.

This is a position read, not a forecast. The ruler does not say what happens next. It says where we are, in a way that can be compared across cycles. That is the difference between a gauge and a forecast. A gauge reads the present. It does not predict the future.

Why the confirmation matters

The reason Orion waits for structure is not caution for its own sake. It is that a Fibonacci ruler anchored to an unconfirmed low is not just slightly wrong. It is systematically wrong, and it stays wrong for the whole cycle, because every level downstream inherits the error of the anchor.

Waiting costs a little time. It means the first part of a new move is not measured, because the ruler is not yet placed. That is a trade Orion accepts: better to miss the first few steps of a leg than to build an entire cycle map on a bottom that never was.

A gauge, not a call

The cycle ruler is one input among many. It sits alongside the conviction score, the regime read, and the macro backdrop. It does not override them, and it does not issue calls. It simply adds a positional answer to the question every cycle asks: where, exactly, are we?
